Aave DAO token holders approved a $25 million stablecoin grant and 75,000 AAVE tokens for Aave Labs on April 5 under the "Aave Will Win" framework, with nearly 75% voting in favor, according to the protocol's governance dashboard.
The funding package formalizes a shift to a DAO-funded operating model. Revenue generated by Aave products, including the institutional-focused Aave Pro, will flow to the DAO treasury rather than being retained by Aave Labs, per the proposal text.
The stablecoin tranche will be paid in installments over 12 months. The 75,000 AAVE tokens, which carry governance voting power, vest linearly over four years. Additional growth and development grants tied to specific product launches and milestones will require separate governance proposals.
Why is this vote significant?
Aave founder Stani Kulechov described the framework as the "most important proposal in Aave's history" in an X post Saturday, adding that it "just passed with a landslide."
"If you own AAVE, you own not just the economic rights of the protocol, but the brand, the users, and the integrations," Kulechov said. "This is the direction we are committing to, a multi-year journey. The foundation is set. Now it's time to build. Aave will win."
Aave ranks among the largest DeFi protocols in the sector, with total value locked exceeding $25 billion, DefiLlama data shows.
What does the framework change operationally?
Aave Labs will focus exclusively on Aave-related products under the proposal, with the stated goal of streamlining operations and accelerating development. The framework also ratifies Aave V4 as the protocol's long-term technical foundation and outlines plans for a new entity to steward the Aave brand.
"Fintechs are entering DeFi, institutions are coming on-chain, and regulatory clarity is emerging in certain markets that allows us to go directly to consumers," Aave Labs stated in supporting documentation.
"The protocols that win the next decade will be those that move fast, build great tools and products and capture new markets before competitors," the team added.
What friction preceded the vote?
The framework cleared a temperature check on March 1. Soon after, Aave Chan Initiative, a major governance delegate, announced it would wind down its involvement with the DAO, citing concerns about governance standards and voting dynamics during the proposal process.
Community members had previously raised objections about the funding size, the inclusion of voting-bearing AAVE tokens, and the definition of revenue. In January, a separate proposal to transfer control of Aave's brand assets and intellectual property to the DAO failed, prompting extended debate over the protocol's long-term direction and governance structure.
What comes next?
With the funding framework in place, attention turns to the rollout of the 12-month stablecoin schedule and the four-year AAVE vesting, alongside forthcoming governance proposals tied to specific product milestones. The transition to a fully DAO-funded operating model represents one of the more significant structural changes among major DeFi lending platforms, and the next quarter will test whether the Aave Will Win roadmap can retain delegate participation after the Aave Chan Initiative's withdrawal.
