Aave V4 on Base launched an "Equities Hub" on Friday, accepting seven Coinbase-issued tokenized U.S. equities as collateral for USDC loans in a market that opens with a roughly $29 million aggregate collateral ceiling.
Eligible non-U.S. users in permitted jurisdictions can now deposit tokenized shares of Apple, Amazon, Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla and borrow USDC against them, according to a statement shared with The Block. Risk parameter provider LlamaRisk set an initial $32 million USDC supply cap and a $21 million USDC borrow cap across the seven assets. Collateral factors range from 65% to 79%, depending on the underlying stock.
What exactly is being tokenized?
The seven assets are Coinbase-issued tokenized stocks deployed on Base. They function as collateral only at launch, with no borrowable status. Chainlink supplies the onchain pricing through dedicated tokenized equity feeds, providing the price discovery layer the lending markets require.
"Until now a tokenized stock was something you could hold or trade. Today it becomes something you can borrow against," Stani Kulechov, founder and CEO of Aave Labs, told The Block.
How does the market structure work?
Aave's Hub and Spoke architecture pools the seven equity collaterals into a single market backed by one USDC reserve. Risk parameters are set individually per asset, and Aave stated that issues affecting one equity are isolated from the others. The market operates 24/7, a structural contrast to traditional securities lending that closes with the exchange.
Why is Aave pushing into equities?
Kulechov has framed the move as part of a broader expansion into tokenized stocks, securities, and other real-world assets. "Public equities are one of the largest pools of capital in the world, and tokenization is starting to bring that capital onchain," he said in the announcement.
In a separate interview, Kulechov added that institutions "come with size" and could drive demand for onchain borrowing. He argued the remaining obstacle is no longer technical. "Tokenization and DeFi are not a technological challenge anymore," he said. "I think it's a go-to-market challenge."
His comments came one day after the U.S. Senate voted 49-50 against advancing the Clarity Act, a market-structure bill. Kulechov suggested DeFi may need to follow an "Uber path" — scaling users until lawmakers are compelled to define the sector's regulatory perimeter.
Who else is involved?
Chainlink's Chief Business Officer Johann Eid framed the integration in market terms: "Aave's adoption of Coinbase's Tokenized Stocks powered by Chainlink as official oracle solution marks a major step toward bringing the $150+ trillion global equities market onchain."
Antonio García-Martínez, Base's Head of Growth, said eligible non-U.S. customers can borrow USDC against the stocks while USDC suppliers earn interest on the deposited collateral.
What comes next?
Aave said additional Coinbase tokenized stocks could be added over time, alongside GHO as a borrowable asset, subject to governance and risk review. The protocol reported cumulative deposits of $3.6 trillion and more than $1 trillion in all-time loans across its markets.
The Equities Hub's initial caps constrain the pilot's exposure during its first weeks of operation. Any subsequent governance vote to expand the asset list or relax parameters will set the trajectory for Aave's institutional push into tokenized real-world assets.
