Backpack Securities has launched a tokenized version of the iShares MSCI Brazil ETF ($EWZ) on Solana, issued through its tokenization partner Sunrise, as Brazilian markets rally on the country's first-round election result. Each token is redeemable 1:1 for traditional shares of the underlying ETF and transferable to conventional brokerages.
The launch lands amid a sharp repricing of Brazilian assets. EWZ jumped roughly 13% on Monday after Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro finished first with about 47% of the vote in Brazil's first-round presidential election, ahead of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at roughly 45%. The result sets up an Oct. 25 runoff. Brazil's benchmark Bovespa index gained more than 8%, and the real strengthened more than 4%, as investors increased bets on a more market-friendly fiscal agenda.
What does the token actually give holders?
The Solana-based instrument is not a derivative or a synthetic proxy. Backpack Securities converts traditional securities into Solana-based tokens that can later be redeemed back into corresponding security entitlements. The company established this infrastructure earlier this year, with Sunrise serving as its tokenization partner.
For holders, the structure offers two operational properties:
- 1:1 redemption for iShares MSCI Brazil ETF shares through Backpack Securities
- Transferability of tokens into traditional brokerage accounts
The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF tracks an index composed of Brazilian equities, making it one of the main vehicles for trading Brazilian stocks.
Why did Backpack time the launch now?
The election-driven rally illustrates the core use case Backpack is targeting. When events such as elections or earnings reports suddenly increase demand for a specific market, crypto-native investors can gain exposure through tokenized instruments without depending solely on traditional brokerage hours. Brazil's first-round result, which caught markets by surprise, produced exactly that kind of demand spike.
The launch also extends a broader migration of traditional assets onto blockchain rails. DefiLlama reported in August that the market capitalization of tokenized equities had grown ninefold over the previous year to more than $3.7 billion. Its latest dashboard tracks about $2.7 billion in onchain public equities, with roughly $196 million actively deployed across DeFi protocols.
What comes next?
Backpack has effectively given crypto investors a direct channel into one of the most closely watched emerging-market trades of the moment. With the Oct. 25 runoff still to come and Brazilian volatility likely to persist, demand for around-the-clock exposure to EWZ could test both the liquidity and the redemption mechanics of the new Solana-based instrument.
