Binance Puts $100M Into Circle, Extending Five-Year USDC Partnership

Binance's $100 million investment extends a five-year Circle tie-up, growing USDC spot pairs on Binance from 140 to 329 since late 2024. Analysts say Tether's $140 billion float won't yield easily.

Outputs

  1. Binance invested $100 million in Circle under a renewed five-year partnership, building on a December 2024 tie-up.

  2. USDC spot pairs on Binance grew from 140 at the partnership's start to 329, with monthly volume rising from a $20-40 billion range to over $80 billion.

  3. USDC market capitalization sits near $74 billion, versus Tether's roughly $140 billion USDT.

  4. Circle agreed to acquire Singapore-based Tazapay for $400 million to extend emerging-markets payment rails.

  5. Kaiko data shows Binance processes 10-20 times the daily USDC spot volume of most competing venues.

Circle received a $100 million equity investment from Binance under a renewed five-year partnership that ties USDC distribution more closely to the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.

The extended agreement, building on a December 2024 tie-up, hands Circle its most consequential distribution channel in markets where Tether's USDT has historically dominated. Binance now lists 329 USDC-quoted spot pairs, up from 140 when the original partnership was announced, according to Kaiko data. The exchange carried just 39 USDC markets in 2021.

"This optimizes the relationship and further aligns Binance's interests with Circle's, echoing Circle-Coinbase's distributor-shareholder model," said Owen Lau, an analyst at Clear Street.

Monthly USDC trading volume on Binance has roughly doubled, climbing from a $20 billion-$40 billion range before the partnership to consistently above $80 billion afterward. Daily spot flows now run $5 million to $10 billion, processing 10-20 times the volume of most competing venues, according to Anastasia Melachrinos, Kaiko's head of research.

How quickly can USDC peel share from Tether?

The deal applies structural pressure on USDT, particularly in emerging markets where Binance has scaled its user base. Distribution alone, though, will not collapse a network-effect advantage decades in the making.

USDC holds a market capitalization near $74 billion, second only to Tether's roughly $140 billion USDT. Shifting that gap will take more than a listing footprint, according to Martins Benkitis, co-founder and CEO of market maker Gravity Team.

"That puts more pressure on USDT, particularly in global trading and emerging markets, where it has built a very strong position over many years," Benkitis said. "But distribution alone won't change that overnight. USDT has deep trading pairs, local liquidity and, importantly, people are already used to using it."

Melachrinos projects the gap could narrow further as Binance extends its emerging-markets footprint. Other major exchanges, she added, have stayed within their prior USDC trading bands, suggesting Binance itself has driven the bulk of the venue shift.

What does the broader Circle playbook look like?

The Binance deal sits inside a wider distribution build-out. Circle Payments Network links financial institutions for stablecoin settlement. The company also agreed to acquire Singapore-based Tazapay for $400 million, adding local banking relationships across emerging markets.

The strategy arrives as competition broadens beyond the two leading issuers. Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe have all pushed deeper into stablecoin payments and infrastructure, raising the stakes for USDC's distribution economics.

Lau noted that the Binance agreement does not give Circle additional leverage over Coinbase, with which it shares revenue from USDC. Circle renewed the Coinbase arrangement in recent months.

Where does regulation head next?

The deal lands as stablecoins enter the regulated finance perimeter across major jurisdictions. APAC has emerged as a key proving ground for issuance rules, use-case approvals, and emerging-market payment rails — a regulatory environment that will determine whether Binance's distribution gains translate into durable share.

Whether the new five-year alignment can compress the roughly $66 billion gap between the two issuers will depend on third-party adoption and jurisdictional licensing decisions, not exchange listings alone.
