Outputs

  1. BitGo launched BitGo Labs, a research and innovation unit, on Wednesday

  2. The unit's first live product is Gokubu, an AI-powered consumer spending card app

  3. CEO Mike Belshe said AI agents will very likely use stablecoins as their native currency

  4. BitGo Labs will publish research, prototype protocols and reference implementations

Custody firm BitGo Holdings, Inc. (BTGO) launched a new research and innovation unit on Wednesday, tasking it with designing, launching and proving out what the company calls the next breakout application for digital assets.

The unit, named BitGo Labs, will initially focus on the intersection of AI and crypto. BitGo's premise is structural: the AI economy still needs crypto financial infrastructure to process micropayments, enable instant settlement, and secure assets — functions the company argues existing rails can't deliver.

"We're focused on use cases that only crypto can deliver, like rates and returns no traditional system can touch, and we're using AI to build them in months, not years," BitGo said in a press release announcing the launch.

What is BitGo Labs actually shipping?

The unit is launching with several live projects in the AI-crypto overlap. The flagship is Gokubu, a consumer application already in production that pairs users with an AI-powered card designed to optimize spending. Each user gets a personalized AI financial assistant intended to unlock better rewards and more value from everyday transactions.

Gokubu is the visible proof point; BitGo Labs' broader remit is research and infrastructure. "Beyond its first projects, BitGo Labs will publish research, prototype protocols and reference implementations, partner with builders, academics, and institutions across the crypto and AI communities," the company said in its release.

BitGo is applying a deliberately hard filter to what leaves the lab. "Every project will be held to the same test: does this application do something no existing system can, and does it make people's lives measurably better?" the firm said.

Why does BitGo think AI agents need crypto?

The launch extends an argument CEO Mike Belshe has been making publicly. In an interview with The Block earlier this month, Belshe said AI agents will very likely use stablecoins as their native currency — a position taken against Maelstrom CIO Arthur Hayes, who has argued stablecoins and other digital currencies can't function as native currencies for AI agents because they can't be converted directly into compute power.

Belshe's counter is that agent-to-agent payments won't fully detach from human systems. "You could end up with agents that are paying each other in some sort of value that the agents decide is good, but they're still going to interface with a human system," he told The Block. He added that humans will likely maintain control over AI for much longer than some commentators predict.

What does this mean for BitGo's business?

The move pushes BitGo beyond its core custody business into product development, a shift that puts the firm in direct competition with consumer fintech while leveraging its institutional infrastructure base. The framing is utility-first: BitGo Labs is targeting applications where crypto's settlement speed and cost profile beat traditional systems on their own terms, not as an accessory to speculation.

For a company whose revenue has historically come from safeguarding institutional assets, running a live consumer app in Gokubu marks a notable operational expansion. Success or failure will be measurable against the unit's own published test — whether its products do something no existing system can.

BitGo Labs says it will publish its first research and prototype protocols in the months ahead, giving the market an early read on whether the AI-crypto thesis holds.
