DATA Network to Abandon Own Chain, Migrate to Sui With $30M Backing
DATA Network, formerly Story, will retire its independent chain and move to Sui with $30M from Sui Foundation; Trace joins Sui and Walrus becomes default storage.

DATA Network, the protocol formerly known as Story, will retire its independent blockchain and migrate its AI training data stack to Sui, backed by a $30 million investment from Sui Foundation, the partners announced on Monday.
The move ends the project's run as a standalone layer-1. Trace, the on-chain registry for AI training data provenance and licensing that launched in June, will join the Sui ecosystem as part of the migration. Walrus, the decentralized storage platform built within the Sui ecosystem, will become the default storage layer for applications operated by DATA Foundation.
The $30 million commitment from Sui Foundation is the financial anchor of the deal. It signals that the Sui side is not merely onboarding another application but underwriting the transition of a full protocol stack — registry, licensing logic and storage — onto its infrastructure.
Why migrate at all?
The partners cited concrete throughput and capacity constraints as the rationale. Sui's ability to process millions of daily data registrations fit the registration-heavy workload that Trace generates, while Walrus's capacity to store large training datasets addressed the storage problem that any serious AI data provenance system faces.
In other words, the decision reads as an infrastructure judgment rather than a branding exercise. Running a purpose-built chain for IP and data licensing imposes validator, security and operational costs that a mid-stage protocol may struggle to justify, especially when an existing ecosystem offers comparable primitives at scale.
What happens to holders and the current chain?
DATA Network will continue to operate until the upgrade is complete, the partners said. A detailed timeline and a holder transition plan will be published before the upgrade takes effect.
That leaves the most consequential question — how token holders and registered data assets on the retiring chain will be migrated — formally unanswered for now. Transition plans of this kind typically carry mechanics around token swaps, snapshot dates and registry state porting, but no such details have been disclosed yet.
From IP licensing to AI data
The migration caps a rapid strategic transformation. Story Protocol began as a blockchain built around intellectual property licensing. In June, the project pivoted to building what it called a "full stack for AI training data" and rebranded as DATA Foundation.
Trace, the on-chain registry for AI training data provenance and licensing, was the first flagship product of that pivot, launched the same month. The Sui migration represents the second major architectural shift inside roughly half a year.
For the AI data provenance vertical, the consolidation onto Sui concentrates activity on a general-purpose chain with a dedicated storage layer. Developers building licensing and attribution tools for training datasets now have a single ecosystem — Sui for execution, Walrus for storage — where the incumbent registry operator has committed its roadmap.
The operational consequences cut both ways. DATA Foundation sheds the burden of maintaining its own consensus layer and gains Sui's throughput and Walrus's storage capacity. In exchange, it takes on ecosystem dependency: settlement, storage and ultimately user distribution now sit on infrastructure it does not control, and its success ties to Sui's ability to retain AI-sector builders.
For Sui Foundation, the $30 million outlay buys a marquee AI-adjacent protocol and its registry activity, strengthening the chain's position in a sector — machine learning data infrastructure — where provenance and licensing demand is growing.
The next concrete milestone to watch is the promised publication of the migration timeline and holder transition plan ahead of the upgrade, which will determine how orderly the retirement of the DATA chain proves to be.
