DefiLlama Data Shows 71% of Tracked Blockchains Earned Zero Fees

Outputs

  1. 399 of 558 tracked blockchains (71%) generated zero fees in the 24 hours to October 3, 2026, per DefiLlama data

  2. Only seven chains cleared $100,000 in daily fees; Solana led with $1.09 million, followed by Tron ($922,900) and BNB Smart Chain ($793,900)

  3. 443 chains collected less than $10 in fees during the same 24-hour window

DefiLlama's chain fees dashboard recorded zero fee revenue for 399 of the 558 blockchains it tracked over the 24 hours ending October 3, 2026 — roughly 71% of the entire field. The same on-chain data showed an even starker picture further down the distribution: 443 chains, nearly 80% of all tracked networks, collected less than $10 in fees during that window.

At the top of the table, only seven blockchains cleared $100,000 in daily fees. Solana led with $1.09 million, the only network to break the seven-figure mark. Tron followed at $922,900 and BNB Smart Chain at $793,900, forming a distinct top tier. Ethereum took fourth place with $435,000, and Bitcoin came in fifth at $325,600.

Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network operated by Coinbase, ranked sixth with $114,800. Robinhood Chain sat in seventh at $100,900 — just $900 above the six-figure threshold.

The figures measure what users actually paid to transact on each network over a single day, not total value locked, market capitalization or developer activity. Ethereum and Bitcoin, the two largest cryptocurrencies by reputation, landing outside the top three reflects spending patterns on that specific day rather than a verdict on their significance. Bitcoin's fee model, in particular, concentrates revenue during periods of network congestion.

A structural pattern, not a one-day anomaly

The October 3 snapshot was not an outlier. DefiLlama's real-time rankings showed similar concentration patterns throughout 2026, with a small group of networks capturing the bulk of fee activity. Canton Network, a privacy-oriented blockchain built for institutional finance, occasionally topped revenue charts earlier in the year — evidence that the leaderboard itself remains competitive even as the long tail stays dormant.

For teams operating in the remaining 399 chains, the operational consequences are direct. Fee revenue is among the few concrete demand signals in crypto: it reflects users paying real money to transact, rather than holding tokens speculatively. A chain generating exactly zero fees offers little evidence of usage regardless of its marketing or token valuation.

One caveat applies. Some networks deliberately keep transaction costs minimal as a design choice, meaning a modest fee total does not automatically indicate an abandoned chain. A total of exactly zero, however, is harder to explain away.

Robinhood Chain's presence among the seven networks above $100,000 also shows the top tier is not fully entrenched. A well-distributed newcomer with an established retail user base can still break into fee-generating territory, at least on a single-day reading.

For investors and builders evaluating new infrastructure, the data offers a blunt screening tool. Solana, Tron and BNB Smart Chain showed the strongest measured user engagement on October 3 by fee volume; the 399 chains with nothing to show did not.

DefiLlama continues to update its fees-by-chain rankings in real time, and as the gap between fee-generating networks and the dormant majority widens, expect consolidation pressure — through rebrands, migrations or outright shutdowns — to intensify across the long tail through the remainder of 2026.
