Ethereum Exit Queue Holds 767,349 ETH After MetaMask Validator Pullback

Ethereum's validator exit queue held 767,349 ETH on Oct. 5 after MetaMask Staking began precautionary validator exits, while Lido proposes halting new deposits in an upcoming onchain vote.

Outputs

  1. Ethereum's validator exit queue held 767,349 ETH on Oct. 5, with an estimated wait of 13 days and 8 hours

  2. The entry queue stood at 1,436,996 ETH, down 30.7% from 2,073,824 ETH on Sept. 1

  3. Lido contributors proposed setting MetaMask Staking's allocation limits to zero in both curated staking modules on Oct. 5

  4. Lido estimated the full exit, withdrawal and restaking process could take up to roughly 45 days

  5. MetaMask stated its investigation found 'no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected'

Ethereum's validator exit queue held 767,349 ETH on Oct. 5, with an estimated wait of 13 days and eight hours, according to ValidatorQueue's beaconcha.in-powered dashboard. The backlog stems from precautionary validator exits announced by MetaMask Staking following an infrastructure security incident at one of its providers.

The exit line sat 9.8% below its recent daily peak of 850,736 ETH on Oct. 2, yet remained well above the 205,011 ETH recorded Sept. 30. Ethereum's protocol caps how much ETH can leave validation per time window through a churn limit, so a concentrated cluster of exits extends the queue for every subsequent withdrawer.

Lido's Sept. 30 disclosure confirmed that MetaMask Staking, formerly Consensys Staking, began exiting validators it operates within the liquid-staking protocol. Neither party disclosed the ETH total involved, leaving MetaMask's share of the network backlog unquantified.

What does the exit actually deliver?

Clearing the exit queue does not move ETH to a spendable wallet. Funds must first become withdrawable on the Beacon Chain and then transfer through Ethereum's automatic withdrawal sweep, per the network's documentation. ValidatorQueue separately displayed a 7.5-day sweep-delay estimate alongside the queue metrics.

Lido told stETH holders: "No action is required from stETH holders." The protocol warned, however, of foregone staking rewards and validator downtime penalties if affected validators are taken offline during the exit process.

For stETH holders specifically, Lido sources ETH from its deposit buffer and rewards vaults to fulfill withdrawal requests. Withdrawals that require validators to exit remain exposed to the Beacon Chain backlog, though holders can sell tokens on the open market instead of redeeming through the provider's withdrawal queue.

How long will the resolution take?

Lido's Sept. 30 disclosure estimated that exiting, withdrawing and returning the affected ETH to staking could take up to roughly 45 days because of the extended entry queue. It projected the final affected validators to exit by Oct. 7, though not yet be fully withdrawn.

The entry queue ran longer than the exit line: 1,436,996 ETH, with an estimated wait of 24 days and 23 hours. That figure is down 30.7% from 2,073,824 ETH on Sept. 1, per The Defiant's comparison with ValidatorQueue's historical data. The exit-queue decline uses the same comparison method: the Oct. 5 dashboard against the earlier daily snapshot.

What is Lido proposing next?

On Oct. 5, Lido contributors proposed halting new deposits to MetaMask Staking across both curated staking modules by setting its allocation limits to zero. The proposal targets inclusion in the protocol's next onchain vote and would effectively end MetaMask Staking's role as a node operator within the curated vaults.

In its Oct. 1 user update, MetaMask stated its investigation found "no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected." The wallet provider also clarified it does not control clients' staking withdrawal keys, separating client custody from operator-level exits.

What changes for stakers next?

The exit queue's trajectory now depends on whether additional MetaMask-operated validators join the line before any deposit cutoff takes effect. The next Lido onchain vote will determine MetaMask Staking's standing within the curated modules for the remainder of the staking cycle, while validator operators and stETH holders monitor the 7.5-day sweep-delay estimate for any extension caused by elevated withdrawal volume.
