Outputs

  1. Ethereum staking has reached a record high, according to Bitwise

  2. Staking yields are declining as participation grows

  3. Solana chain activity is increasing, Bitwise reports

  4. Compressed yields push investors toward liquid staking and restaking products

Ethereum staking has reached a record high, even as staking yields decline and activity on rival chain Solana grows, according to a new report from asset manager Bitwise.

The finding lands at an awkward moment for the Ethereum ecosystem. More capital than ever sits locked in staking contracts. Yet each staker earns less for doing it. Supply of staked ether keeps climbing while the reward pool stays fixed, and simple arithmetic does the rest.

Bitwise, one of the largest crypto index fund managers, framed the data as part of a broader shift in how investors use public blockchains — less speculation, more infrastructure. Ethereum is becoming a yield-bearing settlement layer. Solana is becoming a venue where transaction counts keep expanding.

Why do yields fall when staking rises?

The mechanics are structural. Ethereum issues rewards to validators at a rate that adjusts with the total amount staked. As more ETH gets locked, the issuance per validator drops. Record participation therefore means record dilution of individual returns.

For institutional allocators, that changes the math. Staking once offered a meaningful premium over risk-free alternatives. A compressed yield makes the trade-off harder to justify unless investors expect additional upside from network usage or fee income.

What does this change for everyday stakers? Mainly expectations. The era of fat staking rewards is fading into a period where returns depend more on network activity than on issuance.

What is Solana's role in the story?

Bitwise's report pairs Ethereum's milestone with a second data point: growth in Solana activity. The two chains are not direct substitutes — Ethereum dominates value settlement and liquid-staking markets, while Solana has carved out high-throughput applications and retail-facing traffic.

Still, developers and capital are not loyal. Rising transaction activity on Solana gives teams an alternative venue for deployment, and that competition compounds the pressure on Ethereum's fee economics at precisely the moment staking yields soften.

The institutional read

For Bitwise itself, the report serves a thesis the firm has pushed for months: blockchain usage is becoming measurable, comparable and reportable, like any other infrastructure asset class. Staked ETH is effectively a productive asset with observable utilization. Solana's activity metrics are effectively a usage report.

Compressed yields also push investors toward liquid staking derivatives and restaking products, which attempt to stack additional return on top of base issuance. That market-structure shift is where analysts expect the next phase of competition among staking providers.

None of this signals distress for Ethereum. Record staked supply indicates deep conviction and reduced liquid float. But it does mark a transition. Ethereum now competes on usage and fee capture rather than on staking generosity.

The trend to watch is whether declining yields push stakers toward yield-stacking products or back into liquid positions — a reallocation that would reshape liquid staking markets through the rest of the year.
