Gemini Swaps Zcash Node Software Ahead of NU7's 25-Second Blocks

Gemini replaced Zebra with Zakura to run its Zcash systems, cutting sync time from nearly a day to six hours ahead of the NU7 upgrade's planned shift to 25-second blocks on Nov. 5.

Outputs

  1. Gemini switched from Zebra to Zakura node software, cutting Zcash catch-up time from nearly a day to just over six hours in its deployments.

  2. Zcash's NU7 upgrade, targeted for Nov. 5, would reduce block times from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, requiring nodes to process transaction batches three times as often.

  3. The Winklevoss investment firm led a $59 million financing of Cypherpunk Technologies, which holds and mines ZEC and uses Gemini for trading and custody.

Crypto exchange Gemini has replaced Zebra, the node software that previously ran its Zcash infrastructure, with Zakura, cutting the time needed to synchronize with the Zcash blockchain from close to a day to just over six hours. The exchange announced the change Tuesday.

The switch comes ahead of Zcash's NU7 network upgrade, which developers are targeting for Nov. 5 on mainnet. NU7 would shorten block times from 75 seconds to 25, forcing every computer following the network to receive, validate and store new transaction batches three times as often.

For an exchange, that validation burden is operational, not academic. Every platform that lists a cryptocurrency runs its own node following that chain. When a customer sends ZEC to Gemini, the coins do not become tradable until Gemini's node finds the payment on Zcash and verifies it. If that node crashes or falls behind, deposits can arrive while customer balances stay empty, and exchanges typically pause deposits and withdrawals for the affected asset until the infrastructure catches up. The length of any such outage depends largely on how quickly a replacement machine can rebuild its copy of the ledger.

Gemini's own deployment data shows the improvement. Zakura caught up with the latest block in a little over six hours, while Zebra needed close to a day. Zakura's developers published a separate benchmark recording four hours and 20 minutes for their software, against nearly 21 hours for Zebra.

The Zakura team also distributes a saved copy of recent network data that lets an operator bring a replacement machine online without downloading Zcash's full history from genesis. In their test, that approach ran about 680 times faster than a standard synchronization — a meaningful margin when a 25-second block schedule triples the frequency of incoming data.

One gap remains. Gemini has not published tests showing how Zakura performs under NU7's faster block schedule. NU7 is scheduled to reach Zcash's test network on Oct. 6, and developers plan to decide on the Nov. 5 mainnet activation date after reviewing those results.

The Winklevoss connection extends beyond the exchange itself. Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss control Gemini, and their investment firm led a $59 million financing of Cypherpunk Technologies, a publicly traded company that holds and mines ZEC. A Winklevoss affiliate sold Cypherpunk a Zcash mining fleet for $33 million in August, and Cypherpunk says Gemini provides trading and custody services for its ZEC holdings.

That web of relationships gives the Winklevoss twins exposure across Zcash's exchange, mining and custody stack — and it raises the operational stakes of the NU7 transition for their businesses. An exchange running slow synchronization software after a threefold increase in block frequency risks longer deposit and withdrawal suspensions and degraded customer experience during exactly the period when network attention is highest.

The next checkpoint is Oct. 6, when NU7 lands on Zcash's test network. The mainnet decision for Nov. 5 follows the testnet results, and operators listing ZEC will need to demonstrate their infrastructure holds up under the accelerated schedule before activation.
