Grayscale: Zcash Market Cap Hits 1.5% of Bitcoin's in Twelve Months
Grayscale reports Zcash's market cap rose from 0.1% to 1.5% of Bitcoin's in a year as ZEC climbed from $60 to $1,500, aided by the ZCSH ETF launch on NYSE Arca.

Zcash's market capitalization has grown from roughly 0.1% of Bitcoin's to 1.5% over the past twelve months, according to research published by Grayscale on September 29, 2026. The privacy coin's native asset, ZEC, climbed from approximately $60 to around $1,500 in that window, a roughly 19-fold increase that pushed its market capitalization near $13.74 billion by late August, against a Bitcoin market cap hovering around $1.56 trillion at the time.
Grayscale attributes the re-rating to structural demand for financial privacy rather than short-term speculation. The firm's thesis holds that as blockchain transparency improves and on-chain surveillance tools proliferate, a segment of users and investors places increasing value on the option to transact privately. Zcash's core technical differentiator — shielded transactions based on zero-knowledge proofs — encrypts sender, receiver and amount data while still settling on a public blockchain. Privacy remains optional; users can toggle shielding on or off depending on the situation.
By late September 2026, ZEC traded near $1,400 with a reported market capitalization of approximately $23–24 billion, indicating momentum persisted beyond the summer's initial price spike.
The ETF conversion
The market-structure shift matters as much as the price move. On August 25, 2026, Grayscale launched its Zcash ETF under the ticker ZCSH on NYSE Arca, converting the firm's Zcash Trust, a vehicle that dates to 2017. The conversion eliminates the persistent premium or discount to net asset value that plagued Grayscale's earlier trust products. ZCSH now offers direct ZEC exposure with the creation-and-redemption arbitrage mechanism that keeps ETF prices tethered to the underlying asset. The product has reportedly attracted considerable inflows since launch.
Grayscale frames the opportunity in relative terms. Bitcoin dominates what the firm calls the "currencies sector" of crypto, holding roughly 90–93% of that category's total market capitalization. The report includes hypothetical scenarios mapping ZEC's implied price at various levels of Bitcoin market-cap capture: at 2% of Bitcoin's market cap, the implied ZEC price would sit near $1,622. Grayscale labels these scenarios explicitly as hypothetical, not forecasts.
The risk side of the ledger
Grayscale's own report acknowledges the risk profile that accompanies the privacy thesis. ZEC is significantly more volatile than Bitcoin. Regulatory exposure looms larger than for transparent-chain assets: several exchanges have delisted privacy-focused tokens in recent years under pressure from regulators concerned about money laundering. Supply-side mechanics mirror Bitcoin's scarcity model, with Zcash capped at 21 million coins.
The combination of a capped supply, an NYSE Arca-listed wrapper and a widening privacy-demand thesis positions Zcash as the clearest test case yet of whether optional privacy can sustain institutional-scale flows inside a regulated product structure. Whether ZCSH's inflows hold — and whether regulators tolerate listed privacy-coin exposure as delisting pressure persists elsewhere — will define the sector's trajectory over the coming quarters.
