Hoskinson Pitches Midnight's Night Mode Beyond Smart Contracts

At TOKEN2049 Singapore, Charles Hoskinson pitched Night Mode, a Midnight-based privacy framework combining zero-knowledge proofs, MPC and trusted execution, calling Midnight Cardano's "Where's Waldo?"

Outputs

  1. Hoskinson pitched Night Mode at TOKEN2049 in Singapore on October 7–8, 2026.

  2. Midnight's genesis block launched March 17, 2026; permissionless smart contracts went live on mainnet in early October 2026.

  3. Hoskinson personally invested around $200 million in Midnight's development.

  4. NIGHT has a fixed supply of 24 billion tokens; DUST is the shielded fee token.

  5. Midnight announced a Solana wallet integration for private cross-chain swaps.

Charles Hoskinson used the TOKEN2049 stage in Singapore on October 7–8, 2026, to declare smart contracts a transitional technology and promote Night Mode, a privacy-first framework built on Midnight, the zero-knowledge partner chain developed by Input Output Global (IOG).

Hoskinson, who helped popularize smart contracts on Cardano, spent part of his keynote criticizing the very architecture he championed. His critique came with a commercial agenda: Midnight is positioning itself as the next evolutionary step, combining zero-knowledge proofs, multi-party computation and trusted execution environments in a single stack.

The Cardano founder also took a swing at his own ecosystem. The community-funded Cardano booth at TOKEN2049 did not feature Midnight, and Hoskinson called the project the ecosystem's "Where's Waldo?" — a public acknowledgment of governance friction between IOG and the Cardano Foundation that the event laid bare.

What is Night Mode?

Night Mode pairs three privacy technologies. Zero-knowledge proofs let a party prove a statement is true without revealing underlying data — proving you are over 21 without disclosing your birth date. Multi-party computation allows several parties to compute a joint result while keeping individual inputs private. Trusted execution environments are sealed hardware enclaves where code runs out of view of the rest of the machine.

Night Mode supports programmable smart contracts with selective disclosure, written in Midnight's Compact programming language. Midnight ran its own separate keynote at TOKEN2049, where the team also showed Midnight Passport, the Collateral Warehouse and Offer Files.

The network operates on a dual-token model: NIGHT, the governance and utility token with a fixed supply of 24 billion, and DUST, a shielded, renewable token used to pay transaction fees.

What went live and when?

Midnight's technical milestones carry concrete dates. The genesis block launched on March 17, 2026. Permissionless smart contracts went live on mainnet in early October 2026, according to the project's rollout schedule.

Hoskinson has also put his own capital behind the effort, investing roughly $200 million of personal funds into Midnight's development.

Beyond Cardano, Midnight has announced a Solana wallet integration for private swaps, part of a broader cross-chain strategy. That detail may prove the most consequential: a privacy layer confined to one ecosystem has a ceiling, while one that plugs into other major chains could capture transaction volume from users who never interact with Cardano at all.

What are the operational risks?

The engineering burden is substantial. Combining three complex privacy technologies raises the difficulty of shipping secure code, and trusted execution environments introduce hardware dependencies rather than relying purely on cryptography. Developers must also learn Compact, a new language competing for attention in a crowded field.

For investors, the most direct exposure is NIGHT, which has traded with notable volatility as Midnight updates have rolled out. Governance tensions inside the Cardano ecosystem add a coordination risk that the TOKEN2049 booth episode made visible.

What happens next?

Three indicators will test whether Midnight's pitch converts into adoption: developer activity now that permissionless contracts are live on mainnet, real usage of the Solana private swap integration, and whether the ecosystem's governance bodies resolve the IOG–Cardano Foundation friction before the next major industry event.
