Outputs

  1. Mastercard launched Stablecoin Security at Money20/20 in Las Vegas on Monday, scoring stablecoin payments for risk before settlement.

  2. A BIS study of 593 million stablecoin transfers in 2025 found nearly 60% were complex, multi-step transactions.

  3. Initial program participants are Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, both Start Path blockchain accelerator alumni.

  4. The product launches in North America first, with worldwide availability expected in 2027.

  5. Mastercard acquired stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK in August and holds a New York BitLicense covering stablecoins.

Mastercard launched a fraud-detection tool for stablecoin payments on Monday at Money20/20 in Las Vegas. The product, called Stablecoin Security, generates a risk score for stablecoin transfers before a payment settles on-chain.

The tool lets financial institutions screen dollar-pegged token payments for fraud, scams and sanctions exposure. It assesses risk across the full transaction lifecycle, from the moment a payment is initiated through its movement on a public ledger.

Mastercard delivered the product through a platform-agnostic API with two initial program participants: Borderless.xyz and Keyrails. Both are alumni of Mastercard's Start Path blockchain accelerator. The solution launches first in North America, with worldwide availability expected in 2027.

"Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence," said Ann Johnson, Mastercard's executive vice president of security solutions.

Why pre-settlement scoring matters

Mastercard framed the product around a growing blind spot as stablecoins move into cross-border and business-to-business payments. The company cited a Bank for International Settlements study of 593 million stablecoin transfers in 2025. Nearly 60% were complex, multi-step transactions rather than simple one-to-one payments, making it harder for institutions to gauge risk across the whole journey.

The tool analyzes signals including where funds originated, exposure to restricted parties and scam indicators. The resulting risk score slots into existing compliance and fraud workflows, meaning banks don't need to rebuild their stacks to use it.

What does this change for a bank's operations desk? In practice, it moves the fraud check earlier. Instead of investigating a payment after it has moved on-chain and become harder to claw back, compliance teams get a decision point before settlement.

Part of a broader stablecoin push

The launch extends a busy stretch for Mastercard in digital assets. The company recently rolled out its Global Money Platform with BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure firm it acquired in August. The platform lets businesses hold and move fiat and stablecoins through a single connection.

Mastercard has also secured a New York BitLicense covering stablecoins and tokenized deposits. It has moved to enable AI-agent payments alongside Coinbase and Ripple, and it expanded stablecoin settlement to include Circle's USDC and Ripple's RLUSD.

The company said Stablecoin Security builds on existing tools like Crypto Credential and Crypto Secure, and that it plans to extend the product's reach in 2027, including through BVNK.

For Borderless.xyz and Keyrails, participation in the launch gives them an early position in what Mastercard is positioning as institutional-grade infrastructure for tokenized payments. For the banks watching from the sidelines, the 2027 global rollout sets a rough timeline for when pre-settlement stablecoin screening becomes table stakes rather than a differentiator.
