Outputs

  1. Metaplex launched MPL-3643, a token standard for permissioned real-world assets and tokenized securities on Solana, currently in limited-access alpha.

  2. The standard is modeled on Ethereum's ERC-3643 and is built on Solana's Token-2022 program, the Solana Attestation Service, and sRFC 37.

  3. MPL-3643 works with Orca, Raydium, Jupiter, Phantom, and Solflare from launch, and supports reusable investor verifications across multiple offerings.

Metaplex has launched MPL-3643, a new token standard for permissioned real-world assets and tokenized securities on Solana, marking the protocol's most direct push into regulated finance to date. The standard is currently in a limited-access alpha phase, with issuers and developers able to request access through Metaplex's website. The organization has not announced a date for broad public availability.

MPL-3643 gives issuers on-chain compliance controls covering investor eligibility verification, jurisdictional limits, lockup periods, and transfer restrictions. The design mirrors Ethereum's ERC-3643, the established framework for compliant tokenized securities on that chain, but implements equivalent functionality natively on Solana's architecture rather than through a port.

The standard draws on three existing pieces of Solana infrastructure: the Token-2022 program, the Solana Attestation Service, and sRFC 37. Together, these components enforce compliance rules without adding significant per-transaction costs, a critical consideration for issuers weighing high-volume issuance and secondary trading on a network where low fees are a core selling point.

Reusable verification

One design choice stands out for its operational consequences. MPL-3643 supports reusable investor verifications through partnerships with trusted identity services. Once an investor clears a compliance check, that verification carries across multiple token offerings. For issuers, this reduces the repeated onboarding friction that has slowed permissioned token adoption on other chains. For investors, a single eligibility approval could unlock participation across an entire pipeline of securities issuances rather than requiring fresh checks for each deal.

Metaplex founder Stephen Hess has emphasized that the goal is a compliance framework that does not break Solana's composability. That principle shapes the standard's go-to-market. MPL-4364-compatible assets will work with Orca, Raydium, Jupiter, Phantom, and Solflare from launch, meaning compliant tokens can plug directly into existing trading venues and wallet infrastructure instead of being confined to bespoke, siloed platforms.

The distinction matters. Permissioned security tokens on other chains have frequently operated in closed loops, separated from general market infrastructure by design. By keeping compliant assets inside Solana's mainstream DeFi and wallet stack, Metaplex is betting that regulatory controls can coexist with the network's speed and liquidity rather than substituting for them.

From NFTs to regulated assets

The launch marks a strategic pivot for an organization that has spent its life to date in a different corner of the market. Metaplex launched in 2021 as Solana's foundational layer for digital assets, focused overwhelmingly on NFTs. The protocol supplied the minting, trading, and metadata standards that defined Solana's NFT ecosystem and made Metaplex the de facto infrastructure backbone for that sector.

MPL-3643 extends that infrastructure playbook into tokenized securities, a segment where institutional demand for permissioned issuance on high-throughput chains has grown but tooling on Solana has lagged behind Ethereum's ERC-3643 ecosystem. The move positions Metaplex to serve issuers of tokenized equities, funds, and other regulated instruments who previously lacked a native Solana equivalent.

For Solana more broadly, the standard addresses a structural gap. Real-world asset issuance has concentrated on Ethereum and private permissioned chains in part because compliance primitives were mature there. A native standard with wallet and DEX support at launch gives issuers a path to regulated distribution without abandoning the network's composability advantages.

What comes next

The limited-access alpha will determine how quickly Metaplex can move to general availability. Key open questions include which identity service partners the reusable verification system will rely on, and whether major institutional issuers adopt the standard for live securities offerings. Until Metaplex announces a public rollout timeline, MPL-3643's reach will depend on the pace of early issuer onboarding during the alpha window.
