Petrobras Tests Cardano Blockchain to Trace Lower-Carbon Fuel Claims
Brazil's state oil company Petrobras is testing the Cardano blockchain in two research projects covering sustainable aviation fuel and partly renewable Diesel R, aiming to prevent double-counting of emissions benefits and support Scope 3 reporting.

Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled energy major, has begun testing the Cardano blockchain in two research projects designed to trace environmental claims tied to sustainable aviation fuel and its partly renewable Diesel R product, the Cardano Foundation said Wednesday.
The initiative extends Cardano's footprint inside Brazilian state institutions, which already includes federal data-processing utility SERPRO and industrial training body SENAI. Both Petrobras projects remain in the research stage, with no disclosed fuel volumes or deployment timeline.
What is Petrobras actually testing?
The first project targets sustainable aviation fuel, a lower-carbon alternative to conventional jet fuel that can flow through existing aircraft and airport infrastructure. The second covers Diesel R, a Petrobras diesel blend manufactured partly from renewable feedstocks such as vegetable oils and animal fats.
The aviation project tackles a structural weakness in how green jet fuel is sold. Under a model known as book-and-claim, an airline can pay for the environmental benefit of sustainable fuel even when the physical fuel is used elsewhere. That arrangement demands a tamper-resistant record of who owns the benefit and when it has been claimed, so two counterparties cannot count the same emissions reduction.
Cardano would store that record, capturing where each benefit originated, which entity received it and when the claim was retired. In a passenger-facing illustration, a traveler could enter departure and destination airports, calculate the corresponding fuel benefit and receive a certificate linking the allocation back to the original fuel certificate.
How would the diesel project work?
The diesel track operates further down the supply chain. Records would be written at each stage of production, transportation and use, then stitched into a single history of the fuel's journey. That ledger is intended to support corporate Scope 3 emissions reporting, the indirect emissions embedded in a company's suppliers and customers, where the underlying data typically sits with other businesses.
Why does this matter for Cardano's institutional pipeline?
Frederik Gregaard, chief executive of the Cardano Foundation, framed the Petrobras work as a continuation of Brazilian institutional adoption rather than a one-off pilot.
"Brazil has been one of the most consistent adopters of Cardano, from SERPRO in government to SENAI in industry. It's great to see Petrobras, one of the largest firms in the region, continue to see value in on-chain provenance and traceability," Gregaard said.
He tied the engagement to two recent infrastructure additions: the x402 payment standard, which lets applications and AI agents settle for data or compute at the point of request, and Fireblocks' support for Cardano Native Tokens.
"Institutional interest in Cardano keeps growing, especially with x402 arriving on Cardano and Fireblocks adding support for Cardano Native Tokens. It's never been a better time for enterprises to consider what this technology offers," Gregaard added.
Cardano joined x402 this month. The standard's initial payment-processing software was tested on Cardano's pre-production network, with commercial use on the live blockchain still pending demonstration.
What remains unresolved?
Both Petrobras projects are explicitly research work. The diesel model is described as proposed, and the announcement disclosed neither fuel volumes nor a timetable for wider deployment. The aviation project likewise stops short of naming partners, geographies or expected certificate throughput.
The next operational signal to watch is whether either project advances from research to a pilot with named counterparties, disclosed volumes and a defined reporting standard, since book-and-claim accounting for sustainable aviation fuel operates against international certification schemes rather than a single national rulebook.
