Porsche Shuts Down Web3 Project Less Than Four Years After Launch
Porsche ends its Web3 project and Pioneers Circle after 911 NFT trading fell to about $2,900 monthly; tokens stay on-chain with holders as channels go dormant.

Porsche announced the end of its Web3 project and Pioneers Circle community in a post on X, nearly four years after launch.
The 911 NFT collection launched in January 2023 with a planned supply of 7,500 tokens but minting was halted at 2,363 after pricing and utility complaints.
OpenSea data shows roughly $20 million in all-time trading volume, but only about $38,000 over the past year and around $2,900 over the past month.
NFTs remain with holders on-chain; the Discord becomes a read-only archive and the X account will no longer be actively updated.
Then-deputy chairman Lutz Meschke said in 2022 the commitment was 'for the long haul', citing metaverse, purchasing and supply chain uses.
Porsche is winding down its Web3 project and the associated Pioneers Circle community, ending an initiative the German automaker once described as a commitment "for the long haul" — less than four years after it began.
"Today, we are announcing the conclusion of the Porsche Web3 project and Pioneers Circle," the company said in a post on X. Porsche said the project had grown beyond its original technology focus to include community events and other online and offline activities.
The decision closes out one of the most prominent corporate NFT experiments of the last cycle. Porsche launched its 911 NFT collection in January 2023 with a planned supply of 7,500 tokens, but halted minting after backlash over pricing and the lack of utility, leaving the final supply at 2,363.
The operational wind-down is gradual rather than immediate. The Porsche 911 NFTs will remain with their holders and continue to exist on-chain. Porsche will convert the project's Discord server into a read-only archive and stop actively updating the project's X account.
Market data underscores how far activity has fallen. According to OpenSea, the collection has generated roughly $20 million in all-time trading volume — but only about $38,000 over the past year and around $2,900 over the past month. That collapse in secondary-market liquidity effectively removed the commercial rationale for maintaining a dedicated community team.
Porsche's original ambitions were considerably broader. When the automaker unveiled its Web3 plans in 2022, Lutz Meschke, then deputy chairman, framed the commitment as long-term and cited potential applications in the metaverse, purchasing experiences and supply chains. None of those use cases materialized into a sustained product.
The mint itself was troubled from the start. The company's decision to pause sales at 2,363 tokens — roughly 31% of the planned supply — followed community complaints that the tokens were overpriced and lacked clear utility. The collection never recovered its early momentum, and the Pioneers Circle community became the project's main remaining activity before this week's announcement.
The wind-down leaves holders with an asset that Porsche says will persist on-chain, but without issuer support, active channels or a roadmap. Read-only Discord archives and dormant official accounts typically accelerate the decline of secondary trading in corporate NFT collections, as buyers discount the absence of future utility or engagement.
Porsche's exit adds to a broader retreat by major consumer brands from proprietary NFT projects launched during the 2021–2023 cycle, as corporate attention shifted toward other applications of blockchain infrastructure. For the remaining holders of the 2,363 Porsche 911 tokens, the practical question going forward is liquidity: with monthly trading volume near $2,900, exiting positions at scale will grow increasingly difficult as the issuer steps back entirely.
