RWA Market's $70 Billion Headline Hides Concentration Risk

A token-by-token count of CoinGecko data on October 23 finds 37 percent of the $70.32 billion RWA category sits in one US credit product, and a third is infrastructure, not assets.

Outputs

  1. $26.03 billion — 37 percent of the $70.32 billion in the fifty largest RWA tokens — sits in Figure Heloc, one tokenised US credit product on Provenance Blockchain

  2. $23.32 billion, or 33.2 percent, is infrastructure tokens like Chainlink ($9.20bn) and Stellar ($6.19bn), not tokenised assets

  3. DefiLlama lists 187 RWA protocols with $4.10 billion in deposited capital; Ethereum hosts 62 of them

  4. BlackRock's BUIDL holds $2.18 billion; the eight tokenised money market and bond funds total $11.01 billion

  5. Under Germany's eWpG, only a security in a crypto securities register is a crypto security, and issuers may change the register-keeper without holder consent under section 16(2)

One tokenised credit product from a single US provider accounts for $26.03 billion, or 37 percent, of the $70.32 billion market capitalisation attached to the fifty largest Real World Asset tokens, according to a token-by-token classification of CoinGecko data conducted on October 23. The finding cuts against the way the category is usually marketed.

The product is Figure Heloc, which the provider describes as tokenised credit claims — chiefly home equity lines of credit secured by American residential property, plus corporate loans — recorded on Provenance Blockchain and traded through platforms of the same house. A single product, from a single provider, in a single country, carries more than a third of what gets presented as a global asset class.

The count, which classified each of the fifty largest RWA tokens individually, produced a second finding just as significant: another $23.32 billion, or 33.2 percent, is not tokenised assets at all. It is infrastructure and platform tokens — Chainlink at $9.20 billion, Stellar at $6.19 billion, Quant at $2.68 billion, Ondo at $2.09 billion, plus Algorand, Injective, XDC Network and smaller names. These networks supply price data, settlement and registers for tokenised assets, but as an investment they track the crypto market, not the underlying paper.

What does the $70 billion figure actually contain?

The full breakdown of the fifty tokens:

  • Tokenised credit, largest single position (Figure Heloc): $26.03 billion, 37.0 percent
  • Infrastructure and platform tokens: $23.32 billion, 33.2 percent
  • Money market and bond funds, eight tokens: $11.01 billion, 15.7 percent
  • Gold, three tokens: $5.36 billion, 7.6 percent
  • Remaining positions: $4.60 billion, 6.5 percent

Four groups account for 93.5 percent of the category. Real estate, which features in nearly every RWA explainer, does not appear in the top fifty at all. The largest real estate protocol holds $155 million in deposited capital — 3.8 percent of the $4.10 billion total across protocols.

A third measurement gap matters too. DefiLlama lists 187 RWA protocols holding $4.10 billion in deposited capital, less than a sixteenth of the token market cap. The difference is method: market capitalisation counts every issued unit at the latest price, while deposited capital — total value locked — counts only what sits in protocol contracts. A fund whose units sit in wallets generates no TVL at all.

By chain, the 187 protocols distribute as Ethereum 62, Base 22, Polygon 16, BNB Chain 15, Solana 14, Arbitrum 13, Avalanche 9 and Monad 6, with many protocols running on several chains. In practice, RWA usage cannot get past Ethereum and its layer-2 networks, and a product on a single little-used chain carries that chain's risk on top of issuer risk.

Which parts can investors actually reach?

The economically reachable groups are the money market and bond funds and the gold tokens — together $16.37 billion, or 23.3 percent. The eight fund tokens are led by USYC from Circle at $2.38 billion, Ondo's USDY at $2.37 billion and BlackRock's BUIDL at $2.18 billion, followed by Spiko's Amundi-backed EURSAFO at $1.76 billion, Invesco's USTB at $0.73 billion, Janus Henderson's JAAA at $0.58 billion, Spiko's EUTBL at $0.53 billion and YLDS at $0.49 billion. Two of the eight, the Spiko funds with $2.29 billion between them, are euro-denominated and EU-domiciled — the most relevant piece for European retail investors, though many such funds remain open only to professionals.

Gold tokens total $5.36 billion: Tether Gold at $3.23 billion, PAX Gold at $1.77 billion and Kinesis Gold at $0.35 million-scale $0.35 billion, priced around $3,997 and $4,006 per unit on October 23.

When is a token a security in Germany?

German law is further along than many assume. The Electronic Securities Act (eWpG), in force since 2021, allows securities to be issued by entry in an electronic securities register under section 2(1), with equal legal effect to certificated form under section 2(2). Section 2(3) deems such a security a "thing" under section 90 of the Civil Code, bringing ownership and good-faith acquisition rules into play. Only a security entered in a crypto securities register under section 16 qualifies as a crypto security under section 4(3) — everything else on a blockchain is legally something different, with different insolvency consequences.

Section 16(2) carries a surprise: the issuer may change the register-keeping entity "without the consent of the holder or the beneficiary", unless the terms of issue provide otherwise. Commercial register-keepers need BaFin authorisation as a financial service under section 1(1a) sentence 2 number 8 of the Banking Act, with BaFin's guidance notice 03/2023 setting the supervisor's interpretation.

What does this change for RWA statistics?

Every RWA headline should now be read with three questions attached: what was counted, who issued it, and whether the register sits in a crypto securities register. Concentration in one US credit product means the category's headline growth largely describes an American lending business inaccessible to European retail investors. As tokenised fund issuance widens and EU-authorised venues expand, the divergence between market cap, TVL and genuinely reachable products will remain the number to watch.
