The expansion comes as South Korean regulators develop frameworks for tokenized deposits and security tokens
Shinhan Financial Group is expanding its partnership with Canton Network as the South Korean banking conglomerate accelerates its work on tokenized financial products, Korea IT Times reports.
The announcement deepens a relationship that has already positioned Shinhan among the more institutionally active Asian financial groups experimenting with blockchain-based settlement infrastructure. Canton Network is a privacy-enabled interoperability layer built for regulated financial institutions, backed by participants including Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, Microsoft and Deloitte through the Global Synchronizer Foundation. The network is designed to let banks, asset managers and exchanges operate shared applications while preserving the confidentiality guarantees that regulated institutions require under securities and data-protection rules.
For Shinhan, the expanded partnership signals a move beyond pilot-stage experimentation toward operational integration. The group, which spans Shinhan Bank, Shinhan Securities and other subsidiaries, has been testing tokenization of deposits, securities and money-market instruments across its business lines. Canton's architecture addresses a core institutional constraint: the need for interlinked ledger applications that do not expose proprietary trading and client data to counterparties on a shared network.
The operational stakes are tangible. Tokenized deposits and tokenized securities require settlement rails that reconcile with existing custody, compliance and capital-reporting systems. A network like Canton, which supports smart-contract privacy at the level of individual counterparties, reduces the reconciliation burden that has slowed institutional adoption of public-chain infrastructure. It also aligns with the direction of South Korean regulators, who have advanced a won-based stablecoin and tokenized-securities framework that will require banks to operate compliant digital-asset infrastructure.
The expansion also reflects a broader pattern among Korean financial groups. Shinhan's domestic competitors, including KB Financial Group and Hana Financial Group, have launched their own tokenization pilots and digital-asset initiatives as the Bank of Korea and the Financial Services Commission work through the legal architecture for tokenized deposits and security tokens. Shinhan's decision to scale its Canton engagement suggests management views institutional blockchain infrastructure as a competitive requirement rather than a research project.
For Canton Network, a deepened relationship with one of Asia's largest financial groups by assets strengthens its position in a market where institutional tokenization has moved from proof-of-concept to early production. The network's Global Synchronizer, which went live in 2024, coordinates activity across independently operated Canton application networks, and adoption by systemically significant banks is the key metric for whether that infrastructure achieves meaningful transaction volume.
Shinhan has not disclosed specific product launch dates tied to the expanded partnership. The group's next visible milestone will likely be the deployment of production tokenization services under South Korea's pending digital-asset legislation, which is expected to define the regulatory perimeter for tokenized deposits and security tokens once enacted.
