The Sky community is debating a final proposal that would replace MKR with SKY as the protocol's sole governance token, according to a discussion documented by The Block. The change would also introduce staking mechanics and reward participants with USDS, Sky's flagship stablecoin.
If approved, the move would complete a migration that Sky, the rebranded MakerDAO ecosystem, has pursued since it began splitting its legacy assets into newer tokens. MKR holders have so far retained a choice between the old and new token standards. This proposal would end that duality, though the mechanics of any forced conversion remain to be spelled out in the on-chain vote.
What does the proposal actually change?
The core shift is consolidating governance into a single token. SKY would become the only asset carrying voting rights over the protocol's parameters, collateral decisions, and treasury allocations. In exchange, the proposal dangles staking, allowing SKY holders to lock tokens and earn USDS rewards.
That is a meaningful operational change. A single-token model simplifies governance accounting and removes the arbitrage and confusion that dual-token systems tend to breed. It also concentrates power: MKR holders who do not migrate would lose direct voting influence, a consequence the proposal's advocates have not emphasized.
Staking rewards introduce a second wrinkle. Emissions denominated in USDS would create a recurring liability on the protocol's balance sheet, paid out of revenue that currently accrues to the treasury and buyback mechanisms. The proposal has not yet, in public documentation, specified an emission rate or a cap.
What is not yet settled?
Several load-bearing details remain undefined. The Block's report does not specify the conversion rate between MKR and SKY under the final proposal, nor the timeline for sunsetting the legacy token. Whether staking would carry lockup periods, slashing conditions, or transfer restrictions is likewise unstated.
There is also the question of turnout. Governance participation in the Maker-turned-Sky ecosystem has historically rested with a small set of large holders. A vote to eliminate a token that has traded since 2017 warrants broader scrutiny than routine parameter adjustments, and skeptics within the community have already flagged execution risk.
Why the timing matters
The proposal lands as Sky continues to position USDS as its primary product in a stablecoin market that has grown markedly more competitive since the de-pegging episodes of 2023. Rewarding governance participation in USDS ties tokenholders' income directly to stablecoin adoption, aligning incentives if adoption grows and concentrating exposure if it stalls.
For MKR holders, the calculus is straightforward: migrate on favorable terms, or accept diminished rights in the protocol they currently govern. Plainly, this vote decides who governs Sky and on what financial terms.
