Outputs

  1. Tether reported $1.5B in Q3 operating profit, per a BDO-prepared attestation.

  2. Excess reserves nearly doubled to $7.95B from $4.1B at the end of June.

  3. Tether held $132.4B in US Treasury bills, comparable to South Korea's $134.2B sovereign holding.

  4. Bitcoin reserves rose to $8.37B from roughly $5.8B at the end of June.

  5. USDT accounts for about 60% of the $297.3B stablecoin market, per DefiLlama.

Tether posted $1.5 billion in third-quarter operating profit and nearly doubled its excess reserves to $7.95 billion, according to figures released alongside its latest attestation prepared by independent accounting firm BDO.

The world's largest stablecoin issuer held $191.5 billion in assets against $183.5 billion in liabilities at the end of September. That gap — the reserve surplus backing USDT — compares with $4.1 billion reported in June, meaning Tether added roughly $3.85 billion of cushion in a single quarter.

The balance sheet details matter beyond the headline. Tether's assets included $132.4 billion in direct and indirect US Treasury bill holdings, income that now rivals sovereign wealth. That exposure sits close to South Korea's $134.2 billion in US government debt and exceeds the United Arab Emirates' $116.1 billion, according to August data from the US Treasury Department.

Where the profit came from

Tether generated $4.5 billion in net operating profit during the first nine months of the year, the company said, with income driven largely by US Treasury bills and reverse repurchase agreements. That yield engine reflects the operational reality of the business: customer dollars parked in short-duration government paper, with the spread captured as revenue.

The company's Bitcoin reserves were valued at $8.37 billion at the end of September, up from roughly $5.8 billion at the end of June — a jump driven by both market appreciation and continued accumulation on Tether's balance sheet.

What the numbers say about USDT's position

USDT remains the dominant player in stablecoins, accounting for around 60% of the $297.3 billion stablecoin market, according to DefiLlama data. On Friday, Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said in a post on X that USDT's user base had surpassed 700 million, with adoption concentrated in emerging markets.

The surplus growth also lands in the middle of a long-running transparency debate. Tether has faced years of scrutiny over its reserve disclosures, and in August the company announced it had completed its first full independent financial statement audit by KPMG US — though the audited statements were not made public. Quarterly attestations from BDO remain the primary window into the company's finances.

The distinction carries weight with regulators. An attestation confirms figures at a point in time; an audit tests controls and reporting over a full period. KPMG completing that audit marks a structural step for a firm that has operated for a decade without one, even if the public still cannot read the statements.

The reserve surplus functions as Tether's loss-absorption buffer against redemption pressure. A nearly doubled cushion, built from Treasury yield income rather than new issuance, strengthens the issuer's ability to honor redemptions through a period of market stress without forced asset sales.

Whether Tether releases the KPMG-audited statements publicly, or regulators press for full disclosure as stablecoin rules take shape, will determine how much of this transparency gap closes in the quarters ahead.
