WisdomTree (WT:NYSE) has launched a platform designed to move real-world assets onto public blockchains, extending the asset manager's multi-year push into digital asset infrastructure beyond its existing blockchain-enabled funds and mobile products.
The New York-based firm, which manages roughly $100 billion in assets, has positioned the new platform as institutional-grade infrastructure for tokenizing traditional financial instruments. The offering targets the growing market for on-chain representation of assets such as funds, commodities and other securities, allowing them to settle and trade on public blockchain networks rather than proprietary or permissioned ledgers.
The launch marks a continuation of WisdomTree's blockchain strategy, which dates back to 2016, when the firm first filed for a physically backed bitcoin ETF. Since then, the company has rolled out blockchain-enabled versions of its money market and gold funds, a digital wallet and a dollar-backed stablecoin, WisdomTree Prime and WisdomTree Government Money Market Digital Fund among them. The new platform consolidates that work into infrastructure aimed at third-party issuance of tokenized assets on public chains.
The move places WisdomTree in direct competition with other established financial institutions that have built tokenization capabilities, including BlackRock's BUIDL fund on the Ethereum network, Franklin Templeton's on-chain money market offering and JPMorgan's Kinexys platform. Tokenization of real-world assets has become one of the most active areas of institutional crypto adoption, with asset managers treating public blockchains as settlement and distribution rails for traditional products.
For WisdomTree, the operational consequences center on distribution and servicing. A public-chain platform allows the firm and its partners to issue tokenized securities that can move across wallets and venues with on-chain transfer controls, while keeping compliance functions — identity verification, transfer restrictions and recordkeeping — integrated at the infrastructure layer rather than bolted on by intermediaries.
The company has framed tokenization as a way to reduce friction in fund operations, including settlement times, reconciliation overhead and minimum investment thresholds, though the scale of adoption will depend on regulatory clarity around secondary trading of tokenized securities and the readiness of institutional custody and wallet infrastructure.
WisdomTree shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker WT. The firm's leadership, including chief executive Jonathan Steinberg, has repeatedly identified blockchain-based finance as a core growth pillar for the business rather than a sideline experiment.
The launch arrives as regulators in the United States sharpen their focus on how tokenized securities fit into existing market structure. The Securities and Exchange Commission has yet to finalize a comprehensive framework for on-chain securities trading, and firms building tokenization infrastructure will need to demonstrate that their transfer-agent and recordkeeping functions satisfy federal securities requirements as issuance scales.
With the platform now live, the next test for WisdomTree will be securing issuers and distribution partners willing to bring volume onto public-chain rails — and whether institutional demand for on-chain real-world assets translates into meaningful fund flows over the coming quarters.
