Outputs

  1. BlackRock filed a preliminary SEC prospectus for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT) on Monday, its third Bitcoin ETF filing.

  2. PBIT would use options on IBIT with three overlapping tranches targeting roughly 10% maximum loss exposure before fees.

  3. IBIT held $65.7 billion in net assets as of Monday; ETHA held $8 billion, per BlackRock.

  4. BlackRock has not filed US spot ETFs for Solana, XRP or any crypto beyond Bitcoin and Ether.

  5. Calamos, First Trust and Innovator already offer comparable buffered Bitcoin funds, per Bloomberg's James Seyffart.

BlackRock filed a preliminary prospectus with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on Monday for the iShares Bitcoin Managed Protection ETF (PBIT), its third Bitcoin ETF strategy and a structure that would cap losses at roughly 10% per options tranche in exchange for capped gains. The fund would not hold Bitcoin directly; it would use options linked to the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), the world's largest spot Bitcoin ETF, which held $65.7 billion in net assets as of Monday, according to BlackRock. The filing signals product-line deepening rather than asset-class expansion, and the distinction matters.

What does PBIT actually do?

The proposed ETF would deploy three overlapping sets of options contracts, typically replacing one each month, to buffer downside while limiting upside. Each tranche would initially target maximum loss exposure of about 10% to the underlying Bitcoin-linked asset before fees and expenses. That is a fraction of Bitcoin's historical drawdowns, which have exceeded 70% in prior cycles.

BlackRock's own prospectus carries a caveat investors should read closely. The fund "does not provide a fixed Tranche Protection Start Value, Floor or Tranche Cap Value," meaning the protection is approximate and losses can exceed the headline buffer. Buffered structures are also not novel: Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart noted that Calamos, First Trust and Innovator already offer comparable funds. In short, BlackRock is entering a crowded niche with scale advantages, not inventing one.

Why still no Solana or XRP?

BlackRock's US crypto lineup remains two assets deep. The firm launched IBIT, its spot Bitcoin ETF, in January 2024, followed by the iShares Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHA) in July that year; ETHA held $8 billion in net assets as of Monday. In March 2026 it added the iShares Staked Ethereum Trust ETF (ETHB), and in June the iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA), an options-income vehicle.

Every addition since 2024 has been a new strategy on Bitcoin or Ether, not a new underlying asset. ETF Store president Nate Geraci questioned the pattern directly: "Still shocked they're sitting out on spot ETFs for SOL, XRP, HYPE, etc," he wrote on X on Monday. "BlackRock clearly has high conviction in only sticking [with] BTC [and] ETH. For now," he added. Geraci's "for now" is doing considerable work; the filing discloses nothing about future asset plans.

What are the business consequences?

For BlackRock, PBIT extends the options overlay playbook proven with BITA into defined-outcome territory, targeting advisors and retirement-oriented capital that cannot tolerate full Bitcoin volatility. A 10% buffer, even an imperfect one, repositions Bitcoin exposure from speculative to allocation-compatible for a wider advisory channel. The caveat remains that fees and structural slippage will eat into that protection, and BlackRock has not yet disclosed the expense ratio.

For competitors, the message is competitive pressure: the largest asset manager now contests the buffered-Bitcoin niche against three incumbents. For altcoin issuers, the message is restraint. The largest spot ETF issuer in the world continues to withhold its credibility signal from Solana, XRP and other pending spot ETF applications, whatever the broader market's appetite. The SEC's review of PBIT now proceeds through the standard comment and effectiveness process, and the asset's next inflection point arrives only if BlackRock's asset list grows beyond two.
