Brazil's CSD BR Mirrors BTG Pactual Fund Shares on XRP Ledger

CSD BR, Brazil's securities depository overseeing BRL 22 trillion, is mirroring BTG Pactual fund shares on XRP Ledger via Ripple Custody — a first for regulated market infrastructure.

Outputs

  1. CSD BR, which oversees BRL 22 trillion in registered assets, will mirror BTG Pactual fund shares on the XRP Ledger using the Multi-Purpose Token standard.

  2. CSD BR remains the official source of record; the integration required no new regulatory approvals from CVM or the central bank.

  3. Future phases could include native issuance and peer-to-peer trading of CRIs and CRAs on the XRP Ledger.

CSD BR, Brazil's licensed central securities depository with more than BRL 22 trillion in registered assets, has partnered with Ripple to mirror securities ownership records on the XRP Ledger, starting with investment fund shares issued by BTG Pactual, Latin America's largest standalone investment bank.

The integration is a live production deployment, not a sandbox trial. It involves real fund shares from one of Brazil's most prominent financial institutions and represents a first for the country's traditional market infrastructure: a licensed depository recording securities data on a public blockchain.

CSD BR processes millions of transactions and operates under the supervision of Brazil's securities regulator, the Comissão de Valores Mobiliários (CVM), and the country's central bank (Banco Central do Brasil, BCB). The partnership was executed without requiring new regulatory approvals, indicating the integration was designed to operate within the existing legal framework rather than test its boundaries.

How the mirroring works

The architecture is deliberately conservative. CSD BR remains the official source of record for all registrations and settlements. Ownership data is mirrored onto the XRP Ledger, but investor rights and legal processes stay anchored in the depository's existing framework. Nothing changes for investors in terms of process, and the integration triggers no new legal responsibilities.

The technical stack relies on the XRP Ledger's Multi-Purpose Token (MPT) standard, a newer token capability designed to support a broader range of asset types than the chain's original token infrastructure. Ripple Custody provides the asset security layer, holding private keys and access controls within an institutional-grade custody framework.

For Ripple, the deal extends its custody business into regulated market infrastructure and gives the XRP Ledger a live reference deployment with a supervised financial institution. For CSD BR, the mirroring phase functions as real-world testing of distributed-ledger record-keeping without disturbing the settlement mechanics regulators already oversee.

Why BTG Pactual first

The choice of BTG Pactual as the inaugural use case carries weight. The bank's fund shares constitute a meaningful, liquid asset class rather than a tokenized novelty, which signals the depository is targeting assets that already trade at scale in Brazil's markets.

Executives from both CSD BR and Ripple have framed the cautious rollout as intentional, describing the mirroring approach as a pathway toward safe innovation in market infrastructure.

Roadmap beyond mirroring

The partnership's roadmap could expand considerably. Future phases under consideration include native asset issuance directly on the XRP Ledger and peer-to-peer trading of tokenized instruments. Asset classes flagged for expansion include CRIs (Certificados de Recebíveis Imobiliários) and CRAs (Certificados de Recebíveis do Agronegócio), Brazil's real estate and agribusiness receivables certificates — deep, locally established markets that would give the infrastructure a substantially larger asset base than fund shares alone.

The near-term question is execution. Moving from mirroring records to native issuance and peer-to-peer trading would likely require closer engagement with the CVM and BCB on how secondary-market activity on a public ledger fits Brazil's regulatory perimeter.
