DogeOS Opens EVM-Compatible Testnet on Dogecoin via ZK Rollup

DogeOS launched a public EVM-compatible ZK rollup testnet on September 30, 2026, settling to Dogecoin with DOGE as the native gas token. The $6.9M Polychain-backed team awaits a Core upgrade for native ZK proof verification.

Outputs

  1. DogeOS public testnet launched Wednesday, September 30, 2026, as an EVM-compatible zero-knowledge rollup settling to the Dogecoin network

  2. The project raised $6.9 million in a May 2025 funding round led by Polychain Capital

  3. DOGE serves as the native token for transaction fees inside the rollup

  4. A proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade enabling native ZK proof verification was submitted in July 2025 but remains unimplemented

  5. DOGE traded around $0.094 at publication, down 60% over the past year

DogeOS opened public access to its testnet on Wednesday, launching an EVM-compatible zero-knowledge rollup that settles transactions to the Dogecoin network while leaving DOGE's base layer untouched.

The launch marks the first production environment where developers can deploy Ethereum-style smart contracts against a rollup that denominates gas in DOGE, according to the company's announcement and CEO Jordan Jefferson's remarks to The Block.

What does the architecture actually run on?

DogeOS pairs a trusted execution environment with a permissioned sequencer and an external validator set. Each bridge state transition must carry a valid ZK proof, signatures from a majority of validators, and a TEE attestation before posting to Dogecoin. The Dogecoin network itself never verifies the proofs.

A proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade would let Dogecoin miners validate execution proofs directly, removing the trusted set as a single point of failure. The DogeOS team, which also built the MyDoge wallet, submitted that proposal in July 2025. It has not yet reached implementation.

What does the testnet give developers?

The testnet supports Ethereum tooling and lets builders deploy applications across:

Those categories have never been hosted natively on the Dogecoin base layer. DOGE serves as the native token for transaction fees, a structural choice that ties rollup revenue to the underlying asset.

"We're focused on the public testnet, giving developers time to build and test applications while we validate the network," Jefferson said. "We'll share the mainnet timeline as we reach the next development milestones."

Who is funding the build?

DogeOS raised $6.9 million in May 2025 in a round led by Polychain Capital. The capital has carried the project through a ZK-rollup build, the Core upgrade proposal, and now the public test environment.

Several teams have previously attempted to graft smart-contract execution onto Dogecoin, most without lasting developer traction. The MyDoge wallet's pre-existing user base gives DogeOS an installed audience other rollup efforts lacked.

Can the Dogecoin Foundation get behind it?

Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing endorsed the testnet launch.

"I've spent half a decade encouraging people to take a chance on Dogecoin and to build in its ecosystem," Stebbing said Wednesday in a statement. "My hopes are that DogeOS becomes the springboard for a wave of new utility engineering, the gateway for the next 100 startups to build on Dogecoin."

The endorsement carries weight: the Foundation coordinates protocol-level work for Dogecoin and would be a likely conduit for the ZK-verification upgrade if it advances.

What is DOGE's market signal?

DOGE traded near $0.094 at publication time, down 60% over the past year. Bitwise shuttered its Dogecoin ETF less than a year after launch in early September 2026, a marker of how thin institutional demand remains for the token outside Musk-driven retail flows.

The token's valuation continues to follow Musk's public commentary rather than on-chain fundamentals. A working ZK rollup on DOGE-denominated gas would introduce the first measurable utility-driven revenue stream for the asset since 2014.

What is the next milestone to watch?

Dogecoin miners' willingness to verify ZK proofs natively is the structural hinge. Until the Core upgrade lands, DogeOS depends on its trusted validator and TEE signer to secure state transitions — a setup that limits the rollup's trust-minimization claims and could constrain institutional integrations requiring verifiable settlement.

The team's next disclosure of a mainnet timeline will function as the market's first hard signal of whether the testnet has attracted enough shipping applications to justify a production launch.
