DogeOS Opens Public Testnet for ZK-Rollup Settled on Dogecoin

DogeOS, built by the MyDoge team, opened a public testnet for its DOGE-gas ZK-EVM rollup on Dogecoin, with Barkswap and Superposition Finance deploying early.

Outputs

  1. DogeOS opened its public testnet on September 30, having previously run as a private, invitation-only testnet.

  2. The ZK-EVM rollup settles on Dogecoin and pays gas fees in DOGE; Barkswap and Superposition Finance are building on the testnet.

  3. DogeOS proposed the OP_CHECKZKP opcode to Dogecoin Core on July 22, 2025, to enable native zero-knowledge proof verification for trustless rollups.

DogeOS, the application layer developed by the team behind the MyDoge wallet, opened its public testnet on September 30. The network is an Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible zero-knowledge rollup — a ZK-EVM — that settles on Dogecoin and uses DOGE itself as the gas token for transaction fees and smart contract interactions.

The launch marks the transition from a private, invitation-only testnet to one any developer can access. EVM compatibility means Solidity developers can port existing Ethereum tooling, contracts and skills to DogeOS without learning a new execution environment, lowering the barrier for teams accustomed to Ethereum's infrastructure stack.

The choice of gas token is the detail with the clearest economic implication. Rather than introducing a new fee asset, every transaction on DogeOS — swaps, lending operations, game actions — requires DOGE. If applications on the rollup attract sustained usage, the design creates a demand sink for DOGE that is decoupled from the coin's historical payments, tipping and meme-driven use cases.

Who is building

Two projects are already deploying on the testnet: Barkswap and Superposition Finance. Both point to decentralized finance as the expected center of gravity — trading venues and lending protocols — alongside gaming applications. Their early presence suggests the team anticipates the same application categories that dominate EVM chains elsewhere.

The protocol upgrade underneath

The technical foundation extends beyond the rollup itself. On July 22, 2025, DogeOS submitted a proposal called OP_CHECKZKP to Dogecoin Core, the primary software implementation of the Dogecoin network. The opcode would add native verification of zero-knowledge proofs directly on the Dogecoin base layer, enabling trustless interoperability and zk-rollups while keeping Dogecoin's L1 focused on simple transaction processing rather than general computation.

Jordan Jefferson, CEO of MyDoge, and Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, both framed the testnet as part of Dogecoin's shift from a pure payments network toward a programmable ecosystem. The Foundation's involvement signals the effort has the attention of Dogecoin's core stewards rather than operating as an isolated side project.

What a testnet does and does not prove

A public testnet is a rehearsal. Testnet tokens carry no real value, and testnet activity does not guarantee that users or liquidity will materialize on a production mainnet. Developers gain a working environment to audit contracts and stress infrastructure; the market gets no reliable signal about eventual adoption.

The operational consequences, if the stack matures, are twofold. Developers targeting Dogecoin avoid the friction of a bespoke toolchain, because the enormous pool of EVM tooling applies in principle without modification. Dogecoin holders gain a hypothetical new source of utility demand for DOGE, conditional on applications actually finding users.

The base-layer bottleneck

The binding constraint is OP_CHECKZKP itself. The proposal sits before Dogecoin Core, and base-layer changes to established networks typically advance slowly and require broad consensus among node operators and maintainers. Whether and when native ZK proof verification ships in Dogecoin will determine how trustless DogeOS's bridging can ultimately be; without it, the rollup's security assumptions rely on alternative verification mechanisms.

Until Dogecoin Core contributors act on OP_CHECKZKP and DogeOS ships a mainnet, the September 30 testnet remains an integration test — one whose significance depends on decisions that have not yet been made.
