Hayes Sells $22M in Altcoins, Then Unveils FLOP AI Compute Market Plan

Arthur Hayes sold about $22 million in ETH, ENA and UNI from Maelstrom's book, then detailed plans for FLOP to become the global spot benchmark for AI compute.

Outputs

  1. Lookonchain flagged about $22 million in token sales from Hayes-linked wallets on Saturday, including $15 million in ETH.

  2. Hayes said he "dumped it all," citing "dicey" macro and geopolitical conditions.

  3. In a Monday Substack essay, Hayes proposed the $FLOP/compute exchange rate as the global benchmark for spot compute.

  4. BCG projects the AI compute market to reach roughly $2.3 trillion by 2030, up from $360 billion in 2025.

  5. Flop Labs plans a "massive airdrop" in Q4 2026, announced in August when Hayes became CEO.

Arthur Hayes sold roughly $22 million in altcoins from Maelstrom's directional trading book on Saturday, then pivoted to pitching Flop Network as the global price benchmark for AI computing power. On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged the wallet activity, which Hayes confirmed in his own words: he "dumped it all" and took profits, citing "dicey" macroeconomic and geopolitical conditions.

The sales spanned seven tokens. Lookonchain recorded $15 million in Ether (ETH), $2.7 million in Ethena (ENA), $2.2 million in Uniswap (UNI), $1.2 million in Ether.fi (ETHFI), $398,000 in Aerodrome Finance (AERO), $244,000 in Pendle (PENDLE) and $214,000 in Zama (ZAMA), all from Hayes-linked wallets.

What did Hayes propose two days later?

On Monday, in a Substack essay, the BitMEX co-founder and Flop Labs CEO laid out the derivatives market design for Flop Network and its native FLOP token. His core argument: AI computing power today lacks a universal benchmark price, and Flop can supply one.

Hayes proposed measuring the computing power delivered for each AI inference task and using transaction data from the network to derive a spot price for compute denominated in FLOP tokens. The ambition extends from payments into market structure.

"If Flop becomes the payments network for AI agents, then it follows that the $FLOP/compute exchange rate will be the global benchmark for spot compute," Hayes wrote. He added that a liquid spot compute market would enable derivatives based on that price — effectively treating inference capacity the way markets treat oil or electricity.

How big is the market he's targeting?

Hayes is aiming at a market that consultancies expect to expand fast. Analysts at BCG, in a July 2026 report, examined how soon AI computing power could become a commodity. The consultancy projected the AI compute market will reach roughly $2.3 trillion by 2030, up from $360 billion in 2025 — a more than sixfold increase over five years.

Flop Labs is building the infrastructure to serve that demand. The company is developing a network that lets AI agents pay for computing and decentralized memory services.

Where does the project stand?

Hayes took the CEO seat at Flop Labs in August. At the same time, he said the project was planning a "massive airdrop" of its token in the fourth quarter of 2026, which sets the next concrete milestone for the network's rollout.

The sequencing of last week's events is notable on its own. A veteran trader liquidating a $22 million directional book on macro concerns, then publishing a detailed token-economics essay for his own venture two days later, keeps Hayes firmly at the center of both sides of the trade. If the Q4 2026 airdrop lands as promised, the market will soon get its first broad test of whether FLOP can actually function as the unit of account for machine-to-machine compute payments.
