JPMorgan Chase is extending its JPM Coin deposit token to Ethereum, allowing institutional clients to make payments and settle tokenized asset transactions on the largest smart-contract network, Bloomberg reported on Monday.

JPMorgan Chase ranks as the world's biggest bank by market capitalization. JPM Coin represents US dollar deposits held at the bank and lets eligible clients transfer funds within seconds, around the clock, rather than waiting on traditional settlement windows.

Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, the bank's blockchain unit, said crypto companies could use the token for blockchain payments, while financial institutions could use it to settle trades and post collateral.

Why Ethereum?

Landriault said JPMorgan selected Ethereum for two reasons: its liquidity and its existing use among the bank's clients. The choice puts a dollar-denominated deposit instrument directly on the base layer that anchors most on-chain tokenized-asset activity.

Access stays gated. The tokens are issued on public networks, but JPM Coin remains restricted to approved institutional participants, preserving the bank's permissioned client model even as issuance moves to permissionless infrastructure.

How does this fit JPMorgan's rollout sequence?

The Ethereum expansion follows the bank's November 2025 deployment of JPM Coin on Base, the Ethereum layer-2 network built by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase. At that rollout, JPMorgan said it planned to support additional public blockchains.

In January, the bank announced plans to bring JPM Coin to the Canton Network, a privacy-focused institutional chain. The sequencing shows a deliberate strategy: test on a layer-2 with a known operator, then reach mainnet Ethereum, then diversify across institutional-grade networks.

Cointelegraph contacted JPMorgan for additional details but did not receive an immediate response.

For counterparties, the operational consequences are concrete. Crypto firms gain a bank-issued dollar rail with near-instant finality for blockchain payments. Financial institutions gain a settlement asset and collateral instrument that can move across trading desks without legacy banking hours. Each transfer compresses what traditionally takes hours into seconds.

What comes next?

The expansion signals that a deposit token issued by the largest US bank now circulates on public infrastructure used by both decentralized protocols and institutional trading venues. With Base live since November, Ethereum now added, and Canton planned since January, further public-chain deployments remain the stated roadmap — and the next network announcement will indicate how far JPMorgan intends to push deposit-token interoperability.
