JPMorgan Puts JPM Coin on Ethereum, Extending Deposit Token Beyond Base
JPMorgan deployed JPM Coin on Ethereum after a November 2025 Base launch. Kinexys has cleared over $4 trillion, with a shared bank deposit network targeted for early 2027.

Outputs
JPMorgan launched JPM Coin on Ethereum after debuting the token on Coinbase's Base network in November 2025.
Kinexys has processed over $4 trillion cumulatively, averaging about $7 billion per day.
Only vetted counterparties can hold JPM Coin; each unit is redeemable for dollars with no lock-up.
About $50 billion sits in Ethereum applications, per DefiLlama, alongside two JPMorgan tokenized money-market funds issued December 2025 and May 2026.
JPMorgan, Citigroup and other banks plan a shared 24/7 tokenized deposit network as early as H1 2027.
JPMorgan has launched JPM Coin on Ethereum, giving vetted institutional clients a tokenized dollar claim redeemable on demand on a public blockchain. The deployment extends a rollout that began on Coinbase's Base network in November 2025, following months of testing with Mastercard and Coinbase. Holders can now move the token between the two networks.
Each JPM Coin unit is a deposit token, representing a dollar already held in a JPMorgan account. The bank's documentation states clients can redeem it for dollars at any time, with no lock-up. That structure distinguishes it from a stablecoin, which a private issuer pegs to the dollar and backs with reserves held elsewhere. Only approved counterparties can hold the token; it does not trade on public exchanges.
What does the deployment change operationally?
The core use case is settlement speed. A conventional interbank wire moves only during business hours and can take days to clear. JPM Coin compresses that window to seconds, around the clock, including weekends. JPMorgan expects crypto firms to use the token for payments, while financial institutions can use it to settle trades in tokenized assets or to post collateral.
Kinexys, the JPMorgan unit behind the token, has processed more than $4 trillion in cumulative transactions and averages roughly $7 billion per day. That volume sits against approximately $12 trillion per day across JPMorgan's wider payments business, giving the blockchain rail a clear runway for growth inside the bank's existing franchise.
Why Ethereum rather than another chain?
Emma Landriault, global head of Kinexys Labs, pointed to the capital already circulating on Ethereum, where about $50 billion sits in applications according to DefiLlama, alongside tokenized money-market funds and other tokenized assets. JPMorgan itself issued two tokenized money-market funds on Ethereum, in December 2025 and May 2026.
"We've clearly been in a year of further convergence between Wall Street and crypto," Landriault told Bloomberg. Matthew Dawson, co-founder of Ethereum Institutional, called the move "a clear signal that institutional finance is moving onto public, verifiable infrastructure."
How does the bank position against stablecoins?
JPMorgan is competing directly with stablecoin issuers for institutional dollar flows. A consortium of more than 100 companies, including Visa, Stripe and Mastercard, launched its own dollar stablecoin last month. Kinexys co-head Naveen Mallela has argued deposit tokens are "a compelling alternative" to stablecoins because they "can be yield-bearing," meaning they can pay interest to holders — a feature most stablecoins lack in regulated form.
The bank is also broadening its infrastructure footprint. In January, JPMorgan said it would bring JPM Coin to Canton Network, a privacy-focused blockchain built for financial markets.
What comes next?
JPMorgan, Citigroup and other large banks plan to launch a shared 24/7 tokenized deposit network as early as the first half of 2027, a timeline that positions deposit tokens as a direct settlement layer for interbank flows now dominated by wires and stablecoins alike.
