JPMorgan Sees Bitcoin Outperforming Most Assets — Yet Won't Allocate
JPMorgan's 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report says bitcoin could beat stocks, bonds and gold over 10 years — but still calls it too volatile to diversify a balanced portfolio.

JPMorgan's 2027 Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions report forecasts bitcoin could outperform most asset classes over the next 10 years.
The report states it is "premature to consider BTC as a diversifier in a balanced portfolio" due to unstable correlations and volatility.
JPMorgan describes bitcoin as "a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing."
The SEC approved spot bitcoin ETFs in 2024; U.S. regulators have taken a more open approach to crypto since 2025.
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has called bitcoin a "pet rock" and a "hyper up fraud," while praising blockchain tech and stablecoins.
JPMorgan's asset management division forecasts bitcoin could outperform most asset classes over the next 10 years — while still declining to recommend it for strategic portfolios. The call comes from the bank's 2027 "Long-Term Capital Market Assumptions" report.
The report's core finding is a split verdict. Its base case shows bitcoin returns beating stocks, bonds and gold over a decade. Yet the bank says it's "premature to consider BTC as a diversifier in a balanced portfolio."
What's holding the bank back?
Volatility and correlations. Price swings in the largest cryptocurrency have dampened, the report acknowledges, but not enough.
"BTC currently lacks a clear role as a diversifier in balanced portfolios due to unstable correlations to other asset classes," the report reads. It adds: "We see bitcoin as a speculative asset and a hedge against monetary easing."
For now, bitcoin "mostly trades like a high beta risk asset that tracks global money supply growth," the report notes. That behavior — moving with liquidity rather than against equity stress — is precisely what a diversifier is supposed to avoid.
The door isn't closed, though. "Should volatility continue to decline and correlations to other asset stabilize, this may evolve in the future, particularly as regulation becomes clearer and liquidity and price discovery continue to improve," the bank said.
Institutional context, with a twist
The stance lands in a Wall Street environment that has warmed to bitcoin since the Securities and Exchange Commission approved spot exchange-traded funds in 2024. President Donald Trump's pro-crypto posture has pushed regulators toward a more open supervisory approach since 2025.
JPMorgan itself is no blockchain bystander. The largest U.S. bank has used distributed ledger technology to launch its own products. Yet CEO Jamie Dimon has spent years as one of bitcoin's loudest critics on Wall Street, calling it a "hyper up fraud" and a "pet rock," and saying its only value is to criminals.
Dimon has split the difference elsewhere: he's praised the underlying technology and endorsed crypto products such as stablecoins.
What does this mean for allocators?
The operational takeaway for institutional investors is straightforward. One of the world's largest asset managers is signaling that return expectations and portfolio roles are separate questions. Bitcoin can top the return stack in a model while still failing the correlation and volatility tests that govern strategic allocation.
The bank's own conditions for a change — lower volatility, stable correlations, clearer regulation, deeper liquidity and price discovery — amount to a checklist allocators can track. Each marks a step toward bitcoin entering the diversified portfolios that JPMorgan advises, a shift that would carry far more weight than any single price forecast.
Until those conditions are met, the bank's position effectively freezes bitcoin out of the strategic bucket while leaving room for it in tactical, speculative mandates — a framing that could shape how wealth platforms position the asset for years.
