Five US spot XRP exchange-traded funds held an estimated $1.7 billion in assets at the Oct. 6 close, even as their combined net inflow for the trailing week totaled roughly $3.9 million, according to market data tracker Maketo.
The disconnect between accumulated exposure and new money sets the structural-versus-decorative question for a sector whose launches are still fresh. The five funds now hold about 1.13 billion XRP at Maketo's daily reference price. XRP itself traded near $1.43 on Oct. 7, down 5.46% over the prior 24 hours.
Where did the new money actually go?
Maketo's Oct. 6 flow data showed aggregate net inflows of $3.14 million. Bitwise's fund absorbed roughly $11 million that day, while Franklin recorded about $4.1 million in outflows and Canary saw around $3.3 million in redemptions. Grayscale and 21Shares were flat.
Canary's own shares-outstanding table confirms the redemptions mechanically: its share count fell from 23.35 million on Oct. 5 to 23.14 million on Oct. 6. The decline identifies a fund losing exposure through authorized-participant redemption, not through secondary-market selling. The two are not interchangeable for flow attribution.
The weekly figure diverges sharply from the $112 million in net additions tracked over the trailing month. The October reading suggests fading momentum even as cumulative AUM keeps climbing.
Can exchange wallets drive a supply narrative?
XRP Insights recorded 21.98 billion XRP across 699 publicly attributed wallets at 24 exchanges at 08:00 UTC on Oct. 7. The aggregate includes cold storage and reserves backing wrapped tokens.
A seven-day comparison showed a decline of 26.5 million XRP, or 0.13%. Binance-attributed balances fell by 33 million XRP over the period, while Upbit's rose by 11.5 million. The narrow week-over-week move is too small to support a withdrawal-driven squeeze.
The monthly print looked more dramatic at 1.63 billion XRP. XRP Insights attributed most of that drop to an Uphold storage migration into wallets outside its tracking set. Adjusted for the migration, the monthly decline shrinks to 75 million XRP, or 0.54%. Even that figure can include transfers into untracked wallets operated by the same exchange.
Why doesn't futures data settle price leadership?
CoinGlass logged $3.97 billion in XRP futures turnover over 24 hours to 14:29 UTC on Oct. 7, against $801.56 million of covered spot turnover. Open interest stood at $3.35 billion. Its price reading placed XRP at $1.4308, down 5.46% on the rolling day.
Gross futures volume running roughly five times covered spot does not, by itself, signal a derivatives-led move. To distinguish a leveraged unwind from fresh positioning, traders need to read price, funding and liquidation tape together, not open interest in isolation.
Ripple's Oct. 1 escrow cycle released 1 billion XRP and re-escrowed 700 million, according to XRP Insights. The 300 million net release changes availability; it does not establish that the coins were sold.
What comes next for the data?
The dated ETF redemptions name which fund lost exposure; they do not name the seller. Bitcoin traded near $83,100 on CryptoSlate's Oct. 7 snapshot, below its Oct. 6 reference close of $85,557.56, framing the XRP move inside a broader risk-off session across majors.
The next usable signals are stronger sustained net ETF inflows, exchange balances netted for storage migrations, and derivatives data showing whether the early-October decline liquidated or merely repositioned the $3.35 billion in open futures contracts.
